Universities set their own policy because there's no consistent way to translate every host institution's grading system, and because study abroad offices differ in whether they treat the term as primarily an academic-record event or primarily an experiential one. Some schools that fully transfer grades do so because their exchange partners use comparable, well-understood grading scales (common with long-standing exchange partnerships), while schools that default to pass/fail often do so specifically to protect students from unfamiliar or harsher foreign grading curves.
The grading curve risk is real and easy to miss. If your program records actual letter grades into your GPA, ask your study abroad advisor specifically about grading norms at your host institution — some university systems abroad grade noticeably harder on average than typical US institutions, and your home school usually won't adjust for that difference.
Will my study abroad grades show up on my transcript? Almost always yes, in some form — but how they're recorded varies. Some schools list actual letter or numeric grades.
